About our
Satellite Gardens

Designated Satellite Gardens

The primary mission of the MRG is to create our main botannical Renaissance Garden. This is in the planning stages. The location will be in Hiller Park in Biloxi.
Our secondary mission is to support the creation of a number of satellite gardens. We encourage every community on the Mississippi Gulf Coast to help bring back the beauty of our environment by building gardens. These gardens, once approved, will be listed as Mississippi Renaissance Garden Satellite Gardens.

Our policy is to foster the creation of these satellite gardens. We offer leadership and encouragement, and will work with any group, organization or city that wants to create gardens in their area to help them get started. The actual planning, the groundwork, and the procurement of trees, plants and flowers is the responsibility of the group building the barden. The work and maintenance will be done by volunteers in those communities. In order for a satellite garden to be officially designated as a Satellite Renaissance Garden, certain procedures must be followed and specific standards must be met.

Below is our Satellite Garden Policy:

The MRG will accept written proposals from entities, communities, and city governments for satellite gardens in areas along the Coast. If approved, the MRG will designate the garden as an official Mississippi Renaissance Satellite Garden site.
It is our wish that the entire coastal community embrace the desire to recreate gardens and landscaped green spaces throughout the area to bring back beauty that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. It is a requirement that the communities in which a satellite garden is located must be involved from the project's inception; therefore, certain responsibilities must be assumed by anyone making a request for satellite designation.

The following policies and procedures are applicable to all requests made to the MRG:

  • Any project approved by the Mississippi Renaissance Board of Directors will be designated as a MRG Satellite Garden site.
  • "It is understood that MRG does not go into any place on their own and do the planning, the planting or the maintenance for any projects. The satellite garden must be initiated by and become the responsibility of the person, group, community or entity requesting assistance for the project.
  • All proposals or requests must be in writing.
  • All garden and planting projects will be presented to, and must be approved by, the MRG Board.
  • If approved as a satellite garden site, a garden may have a name that is appropriate for their garden location. The MRG will need to approve the selected name, and the name shall not include the words "Mississippi or Renaissance". The only signage indicating that it is a Mississippi Renaissance Garden Satellite Garden will be provided by the MRG Foundation.
  • A written description of the project with all detailed information must be accompanied by a completed MRG Satellite Garden Plan (Form B)
  • Footwork must be done to acquire all property releases and permissions from property owners and city and/or county officials by the person or persons making the proposal.
  • The area must have been marked by the Mississippi One Call System for underground utility lines.
" All proposals must list the persons in charge of and/or overseeing the project.
  • Proposals for gardens must include landscape design drawings.
  • All proposals must list the party responsible for maintaining the project, which includes weeding, watering, fertilizing, trimming, and other reasonable maintenance.
  • The signatures of the group or organization that will be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the area must be included.
  • The MRG will be released in writing from any legal liability that may arise with the Satellite Garden (Form C).
  • The MRG must go through a process in approving any proposal; no project will be considered without a reasonable and appropriate timeline for its approval.
  • Should an approved site not be properly maintained to MRG standards, verbal and written requests to comply will be issued. Failure to properly maintain standards after a written request will result in rescinding the designation as a MRG satellite garden site.
  • A written reply listing steps to correct any problems must be received within 30 days of receipt of a MRG request to comply.
  • This policy is subject to revision at any time.
